Ethnic Diversity: Josephine Style

One day in the office Anneke leans over and asks, "Is there an easier word for ethnic diversity? What's an explanation that beginning English learners would understand?"

Wow. Hard question. I thought about it a while and gave her my answer: "The number of people you see that don't look like you." I didn't even think it was incredibly un-politically correct. But honestly, that's basically what ethnic diversity means...

Needless to say, Anneke did not use my definition in her teaching presentation. She opted to translate it into Chinese. The next day, she sent me a map about ethnic diversity (read closely).

It's so hypocritical. Whenever I see a white person, I wonder what he/she is doing in Taiwan. I forget that's what people think about me all the time!
